A wall-Bed is a bed that folds away upright against a wall. Wall Beds are available in various sizes including single & double vertical wall beds & single & double size horizontal wall beds.
Wall Beds are designed so they can be used with minimum effort and this is due to the easy Lift & Lowering mechanism. Simply use the handle to pull down into the bed position and when you need more space the bed neatly folds away. Wall beds are designed for everyday use just like a regular bed or they can also be used as a luxury guest bed solution.
Before ordering a wall bed it is important to make a few checks first.
Check all the dimensions of the wall bed to see if it will fit correctly and open up into the required space.
You will need to check that the wall is suitable to fix a wall bed to. Most walls can have a wall bed fixed to them but it is essential they are fixed securely and with suitable fixings.
Stud walls: Wall beds can usually be fixed to the studs within a stud wall but they must not be fixed to the plasterboard (or similar).
It is essential that the wall bed is fixed securely, so it is advisable that this is done by a tradesperson or someone as competent.
It is worth checking delivery timescales at the earliest opportunity as many wall beds will be made to order and often made in another country so it is worth finding out a rough time scale early on.
Access to and within the property is something that can often be overlooked. Bed bases and other panels can be quite large and in some circumstances such as a spiral staircase or tight corners access may be restricted so it is important to check that the items can actually be delivered into the room.
Wall beds must be fixed direct to a solid structure such as brick, concrete or a substantial & solid timber frame. Wall beds must not be fixed to plasterboard or similar. Wall beds should be mounted on a solid floor (not weak floors, floating floors or similar). Installations should be carried out by a professional trades person or someone as competent. Wall fixings are supplied with most wall beds but due to different wall types, the installer should assess the wall and decide on the correct fixings to use. In some cases this may mean supplying your own fixings if needed. An experienced trades-person will have no problem with this but if you are unsure about fixing the wall bed securely then we recommend using a professional trades-person (installer, builder etc...).
BENEFITS OF A WALL BED
CREATE MORE SPACE:
By simply folding away the bed you will automatically create more space within your home. In micro apartments or studio flats wall beds are essential. Quite often in smaller homes the bedroom is also the living room and so have a bed that can easily pull down or fold away is extremely useful.
Even in an average size bedroom the extra space that a wall bed can create will come in very useful during the daytime.
WALL BEDS ARE READY TO USE IN SECONDS:
The basic design of a wall bed is so good that you can have your bed ready to sleep on in seconds. Unlike a sofa bed or a folding guest bed, a wall bed can be folded away with all of the bedding in place including the duvet & pillows. Just a simple and easy movement of pulling the bed down or folding it away.
A WALL BED CAN ADD VALUE TO A PROPERTY:
Yes it's true! If your selling a house or apartment you will know that space is one of the most important things that buyers are looking for. For example a small flat in London with a wall bed would be far more attractive than a small flat in London without a wall bed - It is almost the equivalent of adding another room to the flat. By having a wall bed installed, your place will stand out above the rest as the most spacious and modern.
A WALL BED CAN ATTRACT TENANTS IN A LETTING PROPERTY:
As with buying a property, when renting a home, space is everything. A potential tenant will be amazed at how much extra space they will have compared to other places they have viewed. With all else being similar it's a no brainer as to which property will be more appealing.
SOME WALL BEDS ARE MULTI PURPOSE:
That's right, not only can you gain more space but some wall beds even have a dual purpose. A home office or spare bedroom would benefit from a wall-desk-bed. A desk by day and a bed at night - A home study & hidden bed in one compact piece of multi use furniture!
WALL BEDS ARE DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY USE:
People often ask if wall beds can be used every night like a regular bed. This is a very important question to ask considering that other types folding or guest beds are not always suitable or practical for every-night use. One of the greatest features of a wall bed is that proper mattresses can be used on them which provides the same comfort as a regular bed. Also most wall beds will have a proper steel bed frame with a sprung slatted bed base. Wall beds are just as comfortable as a regular bed. All in all, wall beds have the same qualities that a regular bed would have and therefore using them on a daily basis is absolutely fine, in fact that is what they are designed for.
The higher priced wall beds are usually hidden within a purpose built cabinet. Modern wall beds often have the door (or front panel) attached to the base of the bed which is a very neat solution. Other ways to hide the wall bed is to install bi-folding doors or some sort of curtain.
WALL BED EXTRAS:
Some wall beds have optional extras such as LED lights, USB charging points & shelving.
Some wall beds have matching furniture options but this usually requires a bespoke design service.
THE HISTORY OF WALL BEDS:
William Lawrence Murphy (1876–May 23, 1957) applied for his first patents around 1900. According to legend, he was wooing an opera singer, but living in a one-room apartment in San Francisco, and the moral code of the time frowned upon a woman entering a man's bedroom. Murphy's invention converted his bedroom into a parlor, enabling him to entertain. Earlier fold-up beds had existed but Murphy introduced pivot and counterbalanced designs for which he received a series of patents, including one for a "Disappearing Bed" on June 18, 1912 and another for a "Design for a Bed" on June 27, 1916. These design features have basically remained very similar for well over a 100 years due to the simplicity and practicality of the design concept.
Wall beds are used for space-saving purposes, much like trundle beds, and are popular where floor space is limited, such as small homes, apartments, hotels, mobile homes and college dormitories.
In recent years, Murphy or wall bed units have included options such as lighting, storage cabinets, and office components. They have seen a resurgence in popularity in the early 2010s due to the weak economy, with children moving back in with their parents and families choosing to renovate homes rather than purchasing larger ones.
Since the first model several other variations and designs have been created, including: sideways-mounted Wall beds, Wall bunk beds, and solutions that include other functions. Wall beds with desks are popular.
Over the years wall beds have been featured in many films. Even though wall beds, (when used and installed correctly) are a very safe, space saving solution, the fold away element of a wall bed lends itself easily to comedy. Wall beds have been used as props in films including Charlie Chaplin, The Three Stooges, James Bond in You Only Live Twice, The Pink Panther, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Dudley Moore, Leslie Nielson and many many more and also various cartoons.
